Session Title: Social Media in the Workplace – Career Enhancing or Career Limiting?
Social media is both liked and loathed by employers. Many employers worry about the amount of unproductive time employees spend using social media during working hours and about the negative image of their company that may be portrayed in social media by unhappy employees. Some employers have begun to use applicant’s social media profiles as a method of job screening. What are the legal dos and don’ts for both employers and employees when it comes to social media?
About the Speaker:
Marcia McNeil has practiced in the areas of labour, employment and human rights law for more than 20 years. Currently, Marcia is a partner in the Victoria office of Heenan Blaikie, one of Canada’s largest law firms. She confesses that she is not an early adopter. She represents clients in the private and public sectors, particularly municipalities, police services boards and high-tech companies. She has frequently appeared before British Columbia’s Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, as well as before administrative tribunals, including the provincial and federal Human Rights Tribunal, labour arbitrators and the B.C. Labour Relations Board.
Marcia began her practice with a large Vancouver firm, after completing a clerkship with the British Columbia Court of Appeal. She subsequently became counsel at the B.C. Labour Relations Board and transferred to a position with the then Public Service Employee Relations Commission, where she provided advocacy and bargaining services to the provincial government. She later joined the Victoria-based boutique labour and employment firm of Fuller, Pearlman, McNeil.
Marcia has been recognized in the 2012 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in employment law. Prior to joining Heenan Blaikie in October 2009, Marcia was a partner in the Victoria office of another national law firm. Marcia is Chair of the B.C. Industry Training Appeal Board and formerly the Vice-Chair of the Community Care and Assisted Living Appeal Board of British Columbia.
