Victoria Women’s Transition House Society (VWTH), working collaboratively, provides shelter, support, counselling and education to women of all ages, with or without children, so that they can live free from the effects of abuse in intimate relationships. The Society strives to prevent and eliminate abuse through education, advocacy and partnerships. Our vision is a community free of relationship violence and abuse.
Victoria Women’s Transition House began 44 years ago in response to a critical need to provide emergency shelter to women in crisis, and from this conception, the shelter remains at the heart of our work and we have received thousands of women and children.
In 2016-17, we housed 154 women and 40 children in our emergency shelter offering a secure temporary home, food, clothing, childcare, toiletries and support while our clients determined their next steps and transitioned to a life free from violence and abuse. Our children’s team and activity workers continued to provide caring support for children at this difficult and confusing time, offering arts activities, games and outings, while mothers had access to compassionate, professional counselling, support and community referrals. Women in crisis received much needed information, support and resource assistance through our 24-hour Crisis and Information Line. The Crisis Line is often the first point of contact for women accessing our shelter and counselling resources. Last year, our Crisis Line staff and trained volunteers responded to more than 2,600 calls.
We are thrilled to partner with Social Media Camp as their 2018 Charity Partner. Sometimes all it takes is getting a message to someone in need, and through social media we have been able to communicate to a much more broad audience and remove some of the many barriers women face to reach out and take that first step towards a better, and safer future.
